My eyes flew open as I writhed in agony.

“Rowan.” Luc’s hands were on me in a flash, pulling away the worst of the pain.

“Shit. The tie came loose in the night,” Anson said, holding up the bathrobe tie. “I’m so sorry.”

“Not your fault.” I could barely get the words out as Luc pulled more of the pain.

A muscle in Vaughn’s jaw ticked. “Where does it hurt?”

I did a quick mental survey. It ached everywhere but the worst was along my ribs. “My side.”

Vaughn was instantly tugging up my tank top. Keene sucked in a sharp breath.

I looked down and stopped breathing altogether. The black mark that had appeared on my chest after my first dream had faded in a number of hours. But something told me this mark wouldn’t fade as easily.

A ragged lightning bolt cascaded down my ribs. I prodded gently on the skin and immediately hissed as pain rocked through me. Luc tugged at more of my hurt. I shook my head. “I’m okay. Don’t wear yourself out.”

Luc simply kept pulling on that thread of pain until the worst that I felt was a dull ache. I collapsed back on the pillows as the buzz of his warmth took over my body.

Keene brushed the hair out of my face. “How do you feel now?”

“Like I have a Luc high.”

Normally the guys would’ve laughed at my quip, but I didn’t even get a chuckle.

“What happened?” Holden asked quietly.

“Kaleb.”

Vaughn let out a low growl.

I toyed with the hem of the comforter. “He needs me for something.”

“If that’s the case, then why is he trying to kill you?” Anson barked.

“I made him angry.”

The room around me stilled.

Holden pinched the bridge of his nose. “Please tell me you weren’t trying to get a rise out of a member of the Quad. The same person who has it in his head that he should rule over the entire shifter community.”

My fingers tightened around the comforter. “I needed information.”

“Did you get any?” Keene asked.

The rest of the guys glared at him. Vaughn shoved his brother’s shoulder. “Don’t encourage her.”

“I don’t want Rowan in danger any more than you do, but I understand the need for more information. To know what we’re up against.”

“I don’t think the rest of the Quad would go along with Kaleb.”

Five sets of eyes shifted in my direction.

Holden moved so that he had a better view of me. “What makes you think that?”

“He’s hesitating. There’s a reason Kaleb hasn’t made his big move yet. There are people that could stop him.”

Luc pushed to a sitting position. “She makes a good point. Why hasn’t Kaleb simply tried to take over the entire council?”

“He’d have to take out the rest of the Quad. I doubt any of them would want to bow down to him after sharing ruling power for so long. He needs brute force on his side,” Vaughn said.

Keene scowled. “Or a hell of a lot of gifted shifters.”

“Who put the Quad in power?” I had never thought to ask what had given these four shifters authority over us all.
